"So we wanted to take just a moment to remind you that providing a safe environment in each of our schools, and providing for the safety and security of our students and staff is always our number one priority. We care about these students as if they were our own.

"This event may be discussed in many of your homes tonight and throughout the weekend. For that reason we wanted to share an appropriate resource from the National Association of School Psychologists website for your consideration in talking to children about a tragic event. Give your kids an extra hug."

U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison:

"I am shocked and deeply saddened by the tragic shooting today in a Connecticut elementary school that took the lives of 27, including 18 children. My thoughts and prayers go out to the families and victims. As a father, I cannot imagine the pain and grief that comes from losing a child in such a senseless tragedy. While we do not yet know the full details of what happened today, I know our nation will come together to support the community of Newtown."

(Ellison was set to appear on MSNBC at 7:20 p.m. Central Time to speak about how Congress can address gun violence.)

Minnesota Commissioner of Education Brenda Cassellius:

"Today, innocent children and educators lost their lives in an unspeakable tragedy. When we send our children to school, we expect they will be safe and secure. Nothing is worse than when our confidence is shaken and the safety of a child is put into question. Our hearts go out to the Newtown community as they begin the long process of healing in the days, weeks and months to come."

Gov. Mark Dayton:

"This dastardly, cold-blooded murder of innocent children and their educators by a deranged individual shocks Minnesotans.  All of our children, their parents, and all of their teachers should feel certain every day that their safety is the paramount concern.  The deepest condolences of Minnesotans go to the parents and families of the victims of this horrific act."

(Dayton ordered state flags at half staff—see PDF of his proclamation.)
