What Would You Do to Save Money?

It's that time of year when the City of Columbia Heights is discussing next year's budget. Even though work sessions and city council meetings are open to the public, very few people come to give their input so I'm trying a different outlet this year: Patch.

Even with Anoka County decreasing their levy it appears that the Columbia Heights School District will be raising their levy and the City of Columbia Heights is currently proposing a 3.98 percent increase. Along with the city and school levy increases there is the loss of the Market Value Homestead Credit so most homeowners and businesses will see an increase in their real estate taxes.

What would you suggest the city do next year? What would you recommend as a way to cut expenses? Maybe it is a small item or possibly a large item but where can we cut expenses and keep as many of our current services as possible? Maybe you think there are certain services we should eliminate altogether? What would those be?

Are there areas where we need to spend more money? Do we need to spend money on certain parks? Are you concerned about the Emerald Ash Borer and if so, should the city spend more to protect us from the infestation? Do we need to buy more run-down homes and level them for new homes to be built or have we done enough? 

The big question is-do we need to start thinking about spending money on a new library? If so, how much would you think would be appropriate for spending on a new library? How should this be funded?
