Time to Check Out a Movie?

Great movie at the Heights this week.

Columbia Heights has a treasure, the Columbia Heights Theatre at 3951 Central Ave NE.  Sometimes we overlook this treasure or ignore it for the glitz and hype of the multiplex theaters located all around us.

The Heights Theatre has the feel of an old fashioned movie theater. Think "The Majestic" when you envision what the Heights Theatre looks like.

It has first-run movies every week and they sell the typical fresh popcorn, pop, and other candy available in most theaters. During the summer months, you can also bring in treats from the Dairy Queen next door to enjoy while you are watching the movie.

What prompted me to write this, is this week, the Heights Theatre is showing "The Help".  The movie is not a high action, drama. Nor is it a sci-fi thriller.  It is the story of a group of women from 1960's-era Mississippi who are willing to make a change by writing their story. It is also blessed with a great soundtrack. You get classic rock such as Bobby Dylan, Chubby Checkers, and Ray Charles. Then you also get a great original song written by Mary J. Blige, "The Living Proof", based on the movie. It is an inspiring story about courageous women who were willing to sacrifice for change.

Thinking about a great movie and a great theater? Think about The Heights Theatre this week and check out "The Help." What better place to see a '60s-based film than in a classic theater like the Heights.

(...and yes, they do spell their name as Heights Theatre, not Theater.)
