Fridley Getting Goodwill Store in December

Retail space where PetSmart was will include drive-through for donations.

Fridley will have a Goodwill retail store starting in December.

Goodwill/Easter Seals plans to open the store to the public on Dec. 15, 2012, after a preview opening on Dec. 14.

The retail space—currently under renovation—is next to The Home Depot at 5660 Main St. NE and was formerly home to PetSmart.

There are currently 28 Goodwill retail stores, with another new store set to open in Chanhassen on Nov. 3.

Goodwill stores sell new and used items including clothing, jewelry, furniture, electronics, housewares and toys. They also offer on-the-job training and skills development to disabled and economically disadvantaged employees.

Revenues from the stores also support programs at 48 service locations in Minnesota and Hudson, WI in areas such as job skills training (automotive, banking/finance, construction, medical office and retail) and job placement, as well as offering free loans of medical equipment—serving more than 15,000 people in the past year.

Among the factors Goodwill/Easter Seals considers in deciding to open a new store are:

  • Ease of access
  • Car traffic counts
  • Demographics of customers (especially women ages 35–54)
  • Building characteristics (such as availablity of lease and a minimum 20,000 square foot space with drive-through access)
