Aldi Grocery Set to Open Friday Just South of Fridley

New Columbia Heights store to hold open house on Thursday.

A new Aldi grocery store will open its doors for business Friday two blocks south of Fridley at 50th and Central avenues NE in Columbia Heights.

On Thursday Aldi will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 11 a.m. and an open house from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. The Aldi store's regular hours starting Friday will be 9 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on Sunday.

after the Columbia Heights City Council approved a plan for a 17,886-square foot store.

To accommodate increased traffic, Columbia Heights created a right-turn lane from 50th Avenue onto northbound Central Avenue NE.

Aldi offers its own brands of grocery items at discounted prices and has some unusual features such as shopping cart rental: Customers deposit a quarter to get a cart on entering, and get a quarter back on returning the cart after shopping.

Fridley has several places to buy groceries, including , , , and and as well as smaller specialty stores such as and the .

Columbia Heights' existing grocery options along Central Avenue NE include Rainbow Foods and another Mike's Discount Foods location.
