Minnesotans May See Auroras Thursday

A solar flare is expected to make the northern lights visible in the continental United States.

Auroras may light up the night sky as far south as central Minnesota, according to the University of Alaska Fairbanks’ Geophysical Institute.

A solar flare took place on Tuesday, and its effects should reach Earth on Thursday. The Geophysical Institute predicts that the northern lights will be visible low on the horizon in as far south as Seattle, Des Moines, Chicago, Cleveland and Boston. Maps show prime viewing areas start just north of Minneapolis.

The Associated Press reports that airlines are diverting flights because of the impending solar storm, which may also disrupt GPS devices Thursday.
