All-wood Fridley Yard Sign Touts Tea Party

What signs of political expression are you seeing around town?

It's election season, but one of Fridley's only political yard signs is a solid wood one that stays out in other seasons too.

Mike Flynn hand-made the sturdy, wooden sign favoring the Tea Party movement that stands in his front yard along busy Mississippi Street NE.

It's actually the third version of the sign that he has maintained over many months. He said he gets signs of approval from passers-by in the form of thumbs-up or comments about having missed his sign after periods when he has removed it.

Day or night, it is visible along Mississippi Street thanks to small, dusk-to-dawn lights aiming at both sides of the sign.

It's a "conversation opener," Flynn said, that shows that "there are a lot more people out there for smaller, less oppressive government."

Placard Opposes Socialism
Across town at Moon Plaza, a sign in a storefront window expresses suspicion about socialism in America with a crossed-out United Nations flag.

School-related Elections Set
Three school districts that include parts of the city of Fridley will hold levy-referendum elections on Nov. 8: Fridley Public Schools (District 14), Spring Lake Park Public Schools (District 16), and Anoka-Hennepin Public Schools (District 11).

The same three districts are holding as well, although in District 14 the election is uncontested, with three candidates for three seats. District 16 and District 11 have contested elections.
