      The Practice of Poetry-Making

Teachers:  Elizabeth and Clem Nagel

(Three-session class at Banfill-Locke Center for the Arts)

Tuesdays 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. (June 11, 18, 25)

Have you ever wanted to write a poem and never dared? Or have you experimented with poetry, but are unsure   how to move ahead?  Poetry-making is shaping words around  the familiar in our lives. It helps us realize truths we have not named and longed to put into words. During class, you will read  examples  of poets from Rumi,Merwin, and Deborah Keenan to  Mary Oliver and William Berry.  As you  experiment  with poetic craft, voice, line breaks,  images and metaphor,  and sound, they  will  become  familiar  concepts. In doing so, you will discover  the intimate relationship  between what a poem says, how a poem says it,  and the layers  under what  the words don’t say. If you wish,  there will be opportunities to share your work during class.
