All of the ducks had to move out of their open water space for a while." Update: Fridley Fire Chief John Berg explained in an email Monday: Fridley conducted training for recruit firefighters on ice rescue and will be running scenario based training for everyone tonight and tomorrow morning.

Spotted from the warmth of the Fridley Dunn Bros. coffeeshop: It was rough going for one person crossing Hwy. 47 at lunchtime Friday when the wind whipped up. It was snowing fat flakes outside of Fridley City Hall, from the looks of this photo from the Parks and Recreation Department. Will the snow accumulate enough for the outside activities at Winterfest Saturday afternoon? The sledding hill at Commons Park had a bit of snow Friday afternoon, the dogsled area outside Fridley Community Center not as much. But Winterfest goes on whatever the weather, so come down for some fun from 1–4 p.m. …

What are the buoys floating in Moore Lake for? Dave Lindquist, Fridley parks division supervisor, explained in an email: The buoys in Moore Lake have thin ice signs mounted on them and are delineating the area where the lake ice typically remains open because of the aeration system that is used to add oxygen to the lake water to help with water quality. The buoys freeze in place and are a warning to people who might venture out onto the winter ice that there is open water. We came up with the idea of the floats about 10 years ago. It’s a much safer way of putting out the thin ice signs. …
