Fridley, Columbia Heights Students Honored in Congressional Art Competition

Artwork by Christine Wilda and Tawney Smart placed in the competition.

Two local students were honored for their artworks in Minneapolis Monday as part of the Congressional Art Competition. Christina Wilda of Columbia Heights High School and Tawney Smart of Fridley High School, both seniors, placed in a competition among student artists from schools in Minnesota's Fifth Congressional District, according to an announcement from the office of U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison (DFL-MN).  Wilda tied for second place with Devin Aadland of the Perpich Center for Arts Education, and Smart won third-place honors. Artwork by first-place winner Claire Drysdale of Breck School will be part of a display at the U.S. Capitol. EVENT: 'The Drowsy Chaperone' at Spring Lake Park High School

Performances of the musical are April 19–21 and 26–28.

See a show within a show as the music and theater departments at Spring Lake Park High School present "The Drowsy Chaperone," April 19–21 and 26–28. The performance schedule is: April 19 is preview night, with all seats priced at $5 each. The same bargain can be had for the matinee show on April 21. Otherwise ticket prices are $10 for adults, $8 for senior citizens and $5 for students. You can buy tickets at the auditorium or online, subject to availability.

Celebrate National Haiku Poetry Day with Haiku Society members in an open reading Tuesday, 7 p.m., at the Banfill-Locke Center for the Arts in Fridley. Bring five haiku to read! (That's 85 total syllables!) Gary Lee Joyner will perform, and refreshments will be on hand.  Get limbered up by leaving a haiku or two in comments below. PHOTOS: $13 Tattoos on Friday the 13th at Fridley's Creative Images

Each Friday the 13th (three this year) they pack 'em in.

Customers crowded into Creative Images in Fridley on Friday for a Friday the 13th sale, when tattoos were only $13. It's a deal Creative Images offers every Friday the 13th, said D.J. Binczik from behind the counter as she greeted new arrivals. Customer No. 45 arrived at 5 p.m. Friday for a sale that started from noon to 10 p.m. On an average day, Binczik said, a tattoo artist there might have two to three appointments or seven or eight walk-ins. A Regular Marc Mihelich's $13 tattoo was a pair of dice on his heavily decorated left arm. The Fridley resident has a spade with the number 13 from the last Friday the 13th, in January.
