More than 200 people were set to take part in the Fridley Kids in Action 5K Fun Run Saturday morning that starts and ends in Commons Park.

Organizer Karin Beckstrand said all ages have registered for the run. "A lot of families running or walking [the course]," she said.

Beckstrand, a music teacher at Hayes Elementary organized the event with Kim Gardner, a physical education teacher at Stevenson Elementary.

In February both schools hosted Olympic hopeful runners, including Katie McGregor at Hayes and Heather Kampf at Stevenson as well as other runners from Team USA Minnesota.

Beckstrand also works at Fridley schools' after-school Learning Academy and at Life Time Fitness in Eden Prairie, where she coordinates the run club.

Life Time Fitness, a major sponsor of Team USA Minnesota, helped to organize the athlete visits and is providing a race clock for participants to judge their time as they cross the finish line.

Beckstrand emphasized that the event is a fun run. "We're not going to do any placing," she said. For this, the event's first year, the emphasis is on fitness and having fun.

Same day registration fees are $5 more than pre-registration: $15 for elementary students and $20 for everyone else. Same-day registrants will be able to place orders for race shirts but won't have them for the race, Beckstrand said.

Students at each school decided on action plans to return after-cost proceeds from the event to the community. Hayes students opted to send money to Lift Up Their Hearts, which is building a school in Rwanda. Stevenson students will send their half of the proceeds to an organization helping families who have a family member in the Armed Services.

The fun run begins at Commons Park, goes to 63rd Avenue NE, into the neighborhood there, then to West Moore Lake Drive to the path along Medtronic Parkway, then north on neighborhood streets, coming out on Seventh Street NE near the ballfields where there is a sidewalk to return to Commons Park.
