Police Beat Firefighters in '49er Days Softball Classic

Rivalry rested for 21 years before Friday night.

The Fridley Police Department defeated the Fridley Fire Department in a softball game during ' on Friday evening at .

It has been 21 years since the two teams played. The police kept a traveling trophy that hasn't truly traveled since 1990, when the police won the last game.

Mayor Scott Lund served as umpire.

Meanwhile the official '49er Days softball tournament started Friday at and continues there Saturday.

Handcuffs and a fire-hose nozzle adorn the traveling police-fire softball trophy. According to engraved plates on the "Anderson-Ledin Trophy," Friday's game was the police team's 13th win, to seven for the fire department team (and one tie).

Recorded results on the trophy begin in 1962, with several gaps. If the teams played in 1969, 1973, 1983-86, no one had the winner engraved. Here is what the trophy says:
