Photos: Fridley Key Club Sleepout Sets Record

170 kids raised $2,490 for the homeless.

When the lights clicked off on the field of boxes and tents Friday night at ’s athletic field, after the last order of 22 pizzas were consumed, 170 kids had raised a grand total of $2,490 for the homeless of the area.

"It's a record,” stated Mary Bowen, advisor to the school’s Kiwanis Key Club, which organized the for hunger and homelessness. "Both for participants and for money raised."

While each student had to pay $10 for the "privilege" of spending the evening in the chilly fall weather, there were donations made above and beyond that amount.

Crystal Long, junior board member, raised the most, with a total of $120. "My church pledged most of it,” Long said.

Haley Stolz was the student organizer of the event, and Will Early is the Key Club President.

Tim Leighton, father of club board member Tom Leighton, obtained 200 boxes from International Paper. All were used.

"This also sets a record number for dues-paying Key Club members" Bowen said. "Each student pays $12 a year for their membership, a requirement for participating in the Sleepout that includes insurance coverage through Kiwanis International."

Morning reveille was at 6:30 am. The field was clean and all the boxes were broken down for recycling by 7:30 a.m.
