Fridley Folks Hit Moore Lake Beach in the Heat—Briefly

The Fourth of July was busy at the beach, but temps around 100 degrees keep people away too.

People have been showing up at Moore Lake Beach to cool off during the current record-setting heat wave. But it may be too hot for some, said Alicia Ward, who supervises the beach building for the City of Fridley Parks and Recreation Department.

Less than a dozen people were on the sand or in the water at about 1:30 p.m. Thursday. An exception was the Fourth of July, which Ward said was "pretty busy."

Most people have been staying less than an hour in recent days, according to Ward.

"A lot of families come with little kids," she said. "They're not going to want to stay out in 100 degrees."

How is the water?

"Pretty warm," Ward said. She said she last went in on the Fourth of July. The building she staffs isn't air-conditioned, so a fan hums nearby her stock of treats for sale.

The beach at Moore Lake Park is open daily noon–6 p.m. There is no lifeguard.
