First a Fake Club, Then Ping Pong Gets Real at Totino-Grace

What started as a phony table-tennis team signup as part of a statistics-class experiment turned into the real deal, WCCO-TV reported.

Totino-Grace High School in Fridley has a new ping pong club, but it came about the strangest way, according to a WCCO-TV report.

A statistics class posted signup sheets for non-existent clubs as an experiment, but the idea of a table tennis team proved so popular that one actually formed, WCCO said.

Now the club is up and running and open to "some friendly meets" with other schools, advisor Mike Munson told Patch by email Friday.

Besides action in residential basements, Fridley has been home to high-profile ping pong play, including hosting the 2010 Minnesota state championships (see YouTube). And the level of table tennis competition at the Fridley Life Time Fitness is rumored to be high (if you know more about that, please contact chris.steller@patch.com).
